A Family Business for 60 Years

Mark Verkerk, director and co-owner of Keukenwarenhuis.nl, didn’t pick it up by chance. Kitchen expertise runs through this family’s veins. He was first trained by his grandfather, later by his father, mother, and uncles. In other words, it was spoon-fed to him from an early age. Or, as Mark himself says with a big smile: “I was born in a kitchen cabinet.”

From his grandmother, Mark learned everything about customer relations, atmosphere, and hospitality. His grandfather taught him the tricks of the trade, but above all, the importance of always showing respect for customers, colleagues, suppliers, and employees. From his father, Jos, Mark learned a great deal about (digital) marketing and sales, while his mother taught him discipline. His greatest motivation is passion for the craft and making people happy. The family still learns from one another to this day, and they have become true kitchen experts when it comes to guidance and advice. In total, they share 60 years of valuable experience and the fourth generation has already been born!

Grandfather started his own business in 1964 together with his wife, working from a small workshop in Ter Aar on the Oostkanaalweg. There, he built cabinets and kitchens to order. After all, kitchens were still carpentry work back then! When business was a bit slower, he enjoyed building small boats. In 1967, the company moved to the Westkanaalweg, and in 1969, a real kitchen showroom was added. Around that time, kitchens also began to be imported from Germany, as they could no longer be made entirely by hand.

Until 1987, the company grew to three kitchen branches, after which the three sons joined the business. The growth continued to over 100 kitchen stores, and on March 16, 2001, the company was successfully sold.

Then the entrepreneurial spirit began to stir again in grandson Mark Verkerk. Like grandfather, like father, like grandson. A new company, Keukenwarenhuis.nl, was founded in Ter Aar. Today, this showroom in Ter Aar has grown into the largest kitchen showroom in the Netherlands, where thousands of kitchens find their way to customers every year. Mark Verkerk’s greatest motivation remains his passion for the craft and making people happy.

And suddenly, we were 25,000 kitchens further. Although our family name remains inseparably connected to Keukenwarenhuis.nl, over the years many other family names have joined us. Team members from all walks of life, yet all sharing the same core values that define our company: honesty, respect, courage, and independence. One Keukenwarenhuis Family!

They are our family, whether they lead the way, work behind the scenes, assemble kitchens, or manage purchasing. Every day, they put themselves in our customers’ shoes. Customers want one point of contact, hospitality, and real help. Because a new kitchen is a serious matter. In many homes, the kitchen is the heart of togetherness. Where stories are shared, tea is poured, sandwiches are eaten, and delicious meals are prepared.

That’s why we take our customers very seriously. Our customers don’t want answers from a chatbot or to design their own kitchen with a complicated software program. They want to be cared for and treated with warmth. A friendly word costs nothing and neither does good service. What it gives us in return is pride and satisfaction in our work, because that’s what we strive for every single day.

We reject false promises. But when we look at our organization, we see endless possibilities. And if something truly isn’t possible, we’ll say so honestly. We simply do our utmost. As a result, we get a lot right and when we make a mistake, we fix it immediately. Fair is fair, wrong is wrong, and solutions are always found.

In the meantime, we keep pioneering. Tomorrow, we want to be better and capable of more. What wasn’t possible yesterday suddenly becomes possible today. Creativity and innovation can take you far — and we love blazing new trails, because that’s how we excel and surprise our customers.

Do we want to grow? Of course! But only from our two megastores in Ter Aar and Dordrecht. Customers now come from as far as Groningen, Maastricht, and even Belgium so why open more stores? We know each customer personally, and that’s something we value deeply.
